4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is my freshly rebuilt 4L60e. I bought this from a guy parting out a 1989 Camaro with an LT1 conversion. He thought it was a 700R4 (which is what i wanted) but when I got there to help remove the transmission I found it was a 4L60e instead.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts Then when the transmission was removed I noticed the three letters on the pump...PWM (pulse width modulated). That means it was a 1995 or newer 4L60e. This is an early PWM 4L60e because later they became common place 96 and on.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts Because 4L60e transmissions are computer controlled they normally have a VSS (vehical speed sensor). This one was modified by the previous owner to have both a VSS and a cable driven speedo. Works for me...now I can keep my original cable drive speedo with no mods need.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is what makes the VSS and cable driven speedo possible. There are two companies that sell kits like this. This kit is from Jags That Run. The other company is ShiftWorks.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts I added an oil drain plug. This is not a kit, it's some thing that I made. I took a standard drain plug, a nut that fits the drain plug, a drill, a grinder, and my welder. I put a X in the bottom of the nut, drilled a hole in the oil pan, and then welded the nut X side down inside the pan.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts Another shot of the drain plug. It should work well and better than the two piece o-ring type they sell and this was much cheaper. Onto the guts of the transmission.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is my Uncle Eddie and My Dad (Paul Sr.). They are both auto mechanics and specialize in transmissions. They both have worked on cars for as long as I can remember. I forgot to take pictures of the rebuild so all the following pics are stock photos of the components installed during the build.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts The Sun Shell is a high fail part so I replaced it with this heavy duty part from SONNAX (Sonnax Smart Shell Kit 77749-02K). It replaces the thin thrust washer with a thick roller bearing, a heavy duty sun shell, and custom race to fit the roller bearing.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts In this diagram you can see how the torque load is changed from stock to protect the Sun Shell and transmission.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts My stator support showed some signs of wear on the splines. My dad recommended that I replace this part. I didn't buy one before hand, so we left the rebuild process to get a new one.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts We also picked up a new valve body separator plate. The old separator plate was worn where the check balls seat. This is the TransGO M30 Heavy Duty Separator Plate for a 1995 4L60e.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts These are the latest molded steel input drum pistons and overrun spring to replace the stock cast aluminium pistions. The new overrun spring is needed because with the new steel pistons the old spring can not be used.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is TruTech's level 1 overhaul kit for applications stock to 400 horsepower. Contains 7 friction Extreme duty Raybestos GPZ105 3-4 clutch and full thickness steels.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is a 5 pinion reaction planet carrier (ACDelco 24241244). The stock carrier was a four pinion carrier and was replaced by GM with a 5 pinion in later models and 4L65e transmissions. 5 pinions distribute the torque better, increasing the life of the transission under high torque conditions.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is a roller bearing that will replace a thrust washer (ACDelco 24236092). This is required when using the 5 pinion reaction planet carrier.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is a 5 pinion input carrier to replace the stock 4 pinion unit (ACDelco 24241248). Again another failure point upgraded by GM in later models of the 4L60e.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts Another roller bearing to replace a thrust washer (ACDelco 24217328). Also required for the 5 pinion upgrade.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is the Reaction Carrier Shaft (ACDelco 24241255). Required when upgrading to 5 pinions because it is machined to receive the two roller bearings.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is the last roller bearing to go in. There are no thrust washers in my transmission it has been fully rollerized now. This is a bearing and bushing update from Greater Dimensions Engineering, it reduces end play to 0.005" verses stock end play of about 0.074".
4L60e Rebuild & Parts We also put in a double race 29 element forward input sprag. My uncle said these fail a lot and should be replace so I bought the best one I could find.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is the TruTech High Performance shift improvement kit 93-04 4L60e. It includes the Sonnax Super hold servo. This should prevent 4 gear slippage and extend the life of the 3-4 clutch pack. This kit also improves the overall shift performance.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts All automatic transmissions could benefit from extra cooling. This is an ACDelco 12546252 Transmission Auxiliary Oil Cooler. Very similar to the plate and fin B&M cooler. Optimium trans temperature for max service life is 175 degrees F. As the oil temp increases it breaks down causing excess wear and shorter service life.
4L60e Rebuild & Parts This is a 9" cooling fan for the aux trans cooler. The trans will be cooled first by the factory in radiator cooler then enter the aux cooler and be cooled more if needed. This fan will be controlled by a temperature switch 170off & 180on.
